729 persons killed in road accidents in 2014
As many as 729 persons have been killed and 4,098 others injured in 504 different road accidents which took place in 2014, city traffic police said.
Though the number of deaths and injuries are shocking, the city traffic police claimed that the number of accidents and deaths have come down compared to last year.
Additional Commissioner of Police, B. Dayanand said that 771 persons killed and 4,289 persons injured in 5,230 accidents reported in 2013.
However, the numbers of accidents and fatalities have been brought down effectively due to strict enforcement, he claimed.
Corroborating his claim, the traffic police have taken a zero-tolerance attitude towards any traffic violations and as a result a total number of 74,36,336 cases have been booked and a whopping amount of Rs 65,92,21,449 towards fine has been paid, he said.
Apart from this, the city police have also seized 16,194 driving licenses from the motorists for violating traffic rules.
