Riyaz is innocent, being framed: Kin
Karwar: The family of Riyaz Ahmed, who was arrested by Bengaluru police on Saturday, have sworn by his innocence and denied his involvement in any terror activities. Speaking to the media from their residence in Makhdoom Colony in Bhatkal on Sunday, Riyaz's father Khwaja Sayeed and sisters Nafeesa and Nafeeya said the 34-year-old was being framed. Sayeed said his son was working in Dubai as a salesman with an automobile spares company for 10 years and visited India only once a year. Riyaz, who is married, usually stayed in Bhatkal with his family for 15 days before returning to Dubai. He had come to Bhatkal in December. Riyaz's family members said he was never involved in any criminal activity nor was he an anti-national. Riyaz was to fly to Dubai three days ago but put it off to avail a cheaper ticket, they said. The family said they were not in a position to dwell at length on the sudden turn of events. They said police have implicated him in the Bengaluru bomb blast case and requested mediapersons not to defame Riyaz by calling him a terrorist. Riyaz was picked up from Mangaluru airport by a Central Crime Branch team on Saturday night just minutes before he was to board a flight to Dubai.
Bhatkal bandh called off Karwar: The Majlise-Islah-Wa-Tanzeem, a socio-religious body of Muslims in Uttara Kannada district, decided to cancel the Bhatkal bandh and protest march scheduled on Monday. The bandh had been called to protest alleged police harassment against Bhatkal people in the name of tracking terrorists. Tanzeem had accused police of planting bombs in the houses of those arrested five days ago in Bengaluru and the coastal town. To counter their bandh call, several Hindutva outfits had threatened to shut the entire district. Tanzeem leaders said a delegation will meet chief minister Siddaramaiah soon and seek a free and fair investigation into the arrests.
